Some nights, sleep feels easy.
Other nights, your body is tired—but your mind won’t slow down.
Or you fall asleep, but don’t feel fully rested when you wake up.
This is more common than most people realize.
WHY THIS HAPPENS
Your body doesn’t turn “off” just because the day is over.
Even when you’re lying down, your nervous system may still be:
- processing stress
- holding tension
- staying alert from the day
So even though you’re resting, your system may not fully shift into recovery mode.
WHAT YOUR BODY NEEDS FOR BETTER SLEEP
Sleep isn’t just about how tired you are.
It’s also about how easily your body can downshift.
When the nervous system is still activated, your body may:
- feel restless
- stay mentally alert
- hold muscle tension at night
This is where simple calming practices can help signal your system that it’s safe to settle.
A SIMPLE 3-MINUTE WIND-DOWN RESET
You can try this before bed or when you notice your mind won’t slow down.
Use two fingers and gently tap on your collarbone.
Take a slow breath.
Say:
“Even though my body still feels a little activated,
I’m allowing myself to settle.”
Repeat a few times.
Then continue:
“This tension from today…”
“My mind still being busy…”
“Letting my body soften…”
“Allowing things to slow down…”
Finish with:
“I don’t have to force sleep…”
“Just allowing my body to rest…”
“Letting myself settle into calm…”
Take a breath.
Notice what shifts—even slightly.
A SMALL SHIFT CAN MATTER
This isn’t about forcing better sleep.
It’s about giving your body small signals that it’s safe to relax.
Sometimes the smallest practices help the nervous system transition more easily into rest.
If you try this and notice even a small change, you’re noticing your body doing what it already knows how to do—just with a little support.
Gentle note
If your body is consistently having trouble sleeping or fully relaxing, massage can also help support the physical side of tension release.
Feel free to mention it during your next visit if you’d like support in that area.
